45th International Conference on Environmental Systems ICES-2015-133 12-16 July 2015, Bellevue, Washington Upgrades to the ISS Water Recovery System Jennifer M. Pruitt1, Layne Carter2, Robert M. Bagdigian3 and Matthew J. Kayatin4 NASA Marshall Space Flight Center The ISS Water Recovery System (WRS) includes the Water Processor Assembly (WPA) By the end of the 1960s, as work towards JF Kennedy’s pledge of putting a man on the moon by the end of that decade culminated in the historic Apollo 11 landing, it had become apparent that the future of human space exploration would require systems to recycle water and oxygen to be developed. Water Recovery and Management Architecture for the ISS US Segment Crew urine is collected in the Waste & Hygiene Compartment (WHC), which consists of a Russian Urinal system (referred to as the ACY) that has been installed in the US Segment. The ISS Water Recovery System is the first liquid recycling system to be flown in space. The water recovery system (WRS) installed on the ISS achieves a recovery rate of approximately 93%, however the origin of this water can be from urine, ambient air, moisture from the astronaut crew’s sweat and breath, as well as even from their laboratory animals. ISS water recovery system project background. Description of the ISS Water Recovery and Management System The ISS WRM provides the capability to receive the waste water on ISS (crew urine, humidity condensate, and Sabatier product water), process the waste water to potable standards via the WRS, and distribute potable water … NASA’s water filter development has also helped produce filters that are now used in humanitarian efforts to make clean water in areas served only by contaminated sources. The effort to make a crew support system that reduces the need for fresh supplies from Earth includes an oxygen generator that is already installed in NASA’s Destiny lab on the space station. II.
