It will use a 39.3-metre-diameter segmented mirror, and become the world's largest optical reflecting telescope … The Very Large Telescope platform during the last stage of construction in 1999. The European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is a revolutionary scientific project for a 40m-class telescope that will allow us to address many of the most pressing unsolved questions about our Universe. The ELT will be the largest optical/near-infrared telescope in the world and will gather 13 times more light than the largest optical telescopes existing today.

Very Large Telescope (VLT), observatory located on the mountain Cerro Paranal (2,635 metres [8,645 feet]) in Chile and consisting of four telescopes with mirrors 8.2 metres (27 feet) in diameter and four others with mirrors 1.8 metres (5.9 feet) in diameter. Currently under construction is the Extremely Large Telescope. Originally dubbed the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), the name of the ELT was changed in 2017. Observations made with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (ESO’s VLT) have revealed the telltale signs of a planetary system being born. Around the young star AB Aurigae lies a dense disc of dust and gas in which astronomers have spotted a prominent spiral structure with a ‘twist’ that marks the site where a planet may be forming. Le télescope et sa structure atteignent un volume comparable à huit fois celui de l'Arc de Triomphe de Paris. Le Very Large Telescope array (VLT – très grand télescope) est l'équipement phare de l'astronomie européenne en ce début de troisième millénaire. The European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) is a revolutionary scientific project for a 40m-class telescope that will allow us to address many of the most pressing unsolved questions about our Universe.
