CSR: Prisoners Find Catharsis In Art. Kasmin Fernandes - October 9, 2018. Catharsis in art began in Greece where they used drama in that way. Channeling the pain experienced through rape, war, or abuse into an artistic medium such as abstract painting, poetry writing, or even film, can have enormous healing effects. People went to the theatre not to be entertained but to experience a catharsis, a purification and purgation of emotions—particularly pity and fear that resulted in spiritual renewal and restoration. Ideally, catharsis in these three domains is a medical homoeopathic discharge and ‘Aufhebung’ of negative emotions, experiences or ‘personal aspects’. Catharsis in the context of healing rituals, psychotherapy and narratives often involves the (re-)experience of pain. Punishment for its own sake is pointless, if it doesn’t transform the mindsets and attitudes of offenders. Similarly, catharsis should be understood as a harmless release of the emotions (however that worked) rather than as an intellectual refinement which educated audiences in the proper use of the emotions.
